Flawed, but still solid Woody Allen comedy. - estefan
Woody Allen plays his most un-likable character in Deconstructing Harry, but that doesn't stop him from giving a funny performance in a rather flawed, but nonetheless good film. The film is actually at its best when it looks at title character Harry's stories interwoven with the plot, with the best and funniest being the ones about a psychiatrist who suddenly decides to become a religious Jew, the actor who becomes literally out-of-focus and the the woman who has an affair with her sister's husband. The major problem with this is actually to do with editing. While it's obviously strange for artistic purposes, it at times ruins the flow of the film and becomes very distracting. Allen's large ensemble cast also aren't quite as strong as usual, with Kristie Alley providing the most annoying performance in the film. Nonetheless, there is enough good and funny material to make this a good flick.Deconstructing Woody - Cricri7
Woody Allen's movies are always a bit autobiographical. He always incorporates items from his personal life into his movies and then portrays them on the screen. That is probably why he is an underrated actor because people believe that since he is playing himself that it must be easy. I don't believe that to be so.
In this movie, he plays a writer who has many neurosis. Harry writes a novel that is a best seller and that is largely taken from his own life and his family and friends are enraged about being depicted in his novel. It doesn't take a genius to see the parallel with his real life. This movie is probably the last of his more successful ones. It may not be his best movie but it is still good.Filth at it's Finest - CaptainRhodes
This is Woody Allen unleashing his dark side which turns out to be a very witty and hilarious dark side that I enjoyed a tremendous amount. The more vulgar and absurd it became the more I found myself laughing. Allen pulls out all the stops in this crude tale of a man-child who, for the sake of his art, emotionally destroys and belittles the people that are close to him. A nasty little man with nasty little habits makes for one great movie.
