Die Hard
40 Stories Of Sheer Adventure!
High above the city of L.A. a team of terrorists has seized a building, taken hostages, and declared war. But one man has managed to escape detection... an off-duty cop. He's alone... tired... and the only chance anyone has.
Bruce Willis stars as New York City Detective John McClane, newly arrived in Los Angeles to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia). But as McClane waits for his wife's office party to break up, terrorists take control of the building. While the terrorist leader, Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his savage henchman (Alexander Godunov) round up hostages, McClane slips away unnoticed. Armed with only a service revolver and his cunning, McClane launches his own one-man war. A crackling thriller from beginning to end, Die Hard explodes with heart-stopping suspense.

A thinking man's action film? I'm running through a spate of old action films that I'd never seen, including this classic. Sorry to say, not many of the older action films are very sophisticated (other examples being Predator, Rambo), which makes for dialogue, situations and plots that are cringe-worthy by today's more elaborate and well thought out standards for action pieces (eg the Bourne films among the best). Back when Die Hard was made, it may have been a standout, but to my eyes last night it was one absurdity after another. How stupid were the LAPD portrayed? Very very very. How many machine gun bullets missed the hero, when fired directly at him? Hundreds, and that doesn't include all the glass fragments that also missed. How stupid was the chauffeur sitting in his car, never hearing shots or explosions? Would FBI agents shoot up a building without ever talking to the hostage takers or trying serious negotiations? Surely they would have in 1988. There is something cozy about sitting mindlessly in front of an action film and being taken away in the fantasy. Us guys love it. The challenge with this film is to avoid suffocating in utter nonsense while enjoying the action.a thinking man's action movie - outlander78
The movie that started it all - terrorists take over a bank and try to steal money, while a hero caught in the mix tries to save the day. This movie was so well done that every movie since has been described as a reference - "die hard on a train" etc. I am sure you have already seen this movie, but if not, zip it!Die hard action + a classic sense of humour; my favourite action movies - Lone_Wolf
Die Hard is without a doubt one of the best action movies I’ve seen. It obviously has great action scenes and set pieces, but honestly, that’s not what makes the movie. What makes it is the brilliantly sarcastic and pessimistic character of John McClane. The charm and humour he brings to the movie is priceless. “Come on down, we’ll get together, have a few laughs!” To contrast this, we have the deadly serious Hans Grubber as the bad guy, and we get an amazingly homed in performance from Alan Rickman, producing one of my favourite bad guy characters and accompanying performance ever. Overall, Die Hard is simply classic action and has spawned a billion imitators (die hard on a boat, die hard on a plane, die hard on a unicycle, ect) but in the end there will only be one devilishly funny and simultaneously tense and action packed Die Hard
