Double Vision
There is only what you believe.
How do you explain the unexplainable? A wealthy Taiwanese businessman is discovered frozen to death at the desk of his penthouse office. A government official's beautiful mistress has been burnt beyond recognition though there are no signs of fire anywhere in her home. A foreign priest is found disemboweled in bed with no visible traces of struggle. To help solve these grisly, supernatural crimes, the Taiwanese government is forced to enlist the services of a top American FBI agent (David Morse, The Green Mile) trained in tracking down even the most elusive serial killers. After teaming up with a troubled local cop (Tony Leung, The Lover), the two men follow a series of bizarre and unnerving clues into Taiwan's darkest, most mysterious realms-which lead them to an ancient religious cult searching for immortality-in this suspense-packed psychological thriller.

I got this to see what Taiwan had to offer to the movie world and wasn't greatly impressed. However I've certainly seen much worse from the rest of China, enough so that I've totally purged my Ziplist of any remaining entries from that country. Sorry. Can't stand seeing guys flying 50 feet to dropkick someone else or scaling a building by running up the side.
You won't find any of these hokey theatrics in this one, however the acting abilities of the characters does leave a bit to be desired, and the story does have a supernatural edge to it that isn't quite rooted in the realm of reality.
It does have a good story to it with a few twists and turns that kind of catch you going "HUH???" but they do sort themselves out quickly and don't leave you with the feeling you've been cheated into seeing another ending where the director wanted to do a crazy person's mind warp as the wrapup. Only just a little of that here.
All in all it was pretty good entertainment, but if you are put off by poor translating in subtitles and are not a fan of Asian movies in general then this might be one that you will want to stay away from.
