Drunken Master
The Original Kung Fu Comedy!
Won Fei Hung (Jackie Chan) stars as the mischievous young son of a martial arts school master who is constantly clowning around when he should be learning kung fu. After his comic antics injure the son of a powerful local man, his father enlists the help of his sadistic uncle to teach his son a little self-discipline. This strange man, who has a reputation for crippling his students, tries to teach Fei Hung a bizarre style of kung fu. At first, Fei Hung resists, but after losing a fight with a local assassin who has been hired to kill his father, he realizes he must master the special art of the "Drunken Boxer."
Drunken Master was the second collaboration between director Yuen Wo Ping (fight choreographer for The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Jackie Chan. Blending intricate martial arts moves with Jackie Chan's trademark slapstick comedy, Drunken Master ushered in the new genre of kung fu comedy and established Chan as its uncontested king.

Hmmm. It looks like it’s a tough crown on zip today with respect to Jackie Chans Drunken Master. This is a typically (almost stereotypical) voice dubbed kung fu flick which I thoroughly enjoyed the first time I watched it several years ago. When I saw it on zip I just had to see it again – after all this is not the kind of movie you find on your typically TMN and late night tv movies.
So into the meat and potatoes – yes it has voice overs, no it’s not a technological achievement for its age, no it will not blow you away with a serious plot line with magical twists and stunning acting, yes it is entertaining. I don’t pretend this is for everyone but if you consider yourself a ban of the Chan, or like everyone – you are kung fu fighting – you’ll probably get a … wait for it…
kick out of this one.Drunken Master (1978): A Good Argument For Enibriation - bwod
Jackie Chan's emergence as a major talent in the film industry, happened with this movie. "Drunken Master" (1978) is a break-through performance for Chan, which demonstrates his charm, talents, and comedic timing a la Charles Chaplin. If you had any doubts about his physical ability and prowess, this film will put those doubts away. He may not be Bruce Lee, but his strength, acrobatics, and excellent Kung Fu style have made him into the legend he is today. Just look at his filmography! To say that he has had an illustrious career, would be an understatement. For pure entertainment value, see this early work by the star. It's great fun!
Oh, and don't be put off by the review which pans the quality of the dvd. Unless you have a magnifying glass, you'll hardly notice its shortcomings.Big Mistake - Devon
Dont make the same mistake that I did and believe that this movie is the latter day Drunken Master movie commonly called "Legend of Drunken Master".
This version appears to not have been remastered at all because it's nothing more than a cheap transfer from a well watched VHS tape. Even though this is widescreen there are tracking errors that make me think they not only used a substandard VHS, but also cheap transfer equipment. The quality is so bad that you can't even make out background details and facial expressions.
I watched less than two minutes and found this to be too horrible an experience to continue subjecting myself to. In short, stay away.
Jackie Chan fans should try his hilarious spoof movie "Half a Loaf of Kung Fu" and the rest of us stay safe and watch his post-Rumble In The Bronx era movies.
