El Mariachi
The Sundance Film Festival winner from Director Robert Rodriguez!
All he wants is to be a Mariachi, like his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather before him. But the town he thinks will bring him luck brings him only a curse of deadly mistaken identity. Forced to trade his guitar for a gun, the mariachi is playing for his life in this critically-acclaimed film debut from director Robert Rodriguez.
Financed with earnings from a month-long stay in a research hospital, this astonishing action adventure was shot with no secodn takes, using borrowed equipment and a talented cast of unknowns. The riveting result is a wild bullet-dodging ride through a world of bandido violence, from the suspense of the opening shoot-out to the tragedy of the unexpected conclusion. WIth little more than a great story and a lot of heart, Rodriguez has craeted pure movie pleasure, setting new standards for independent filmmaking, and establishing himself as an unquestionable talent. "An enormously entertaining movie." (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times)

For a very limited budget, this turns out pretty well ... - sinic
No one is going to confuse this movie for a modern blockbuster. There was very little money to make this movie and it shows. The camera is obviously not top of the line and the sound work is very limited, but what this movie does have is a lot of character and some excellent dialogue.
It was nice to see where the idea came from for Desparado. When give a proper budget, equipment and actors, Robert Rodrigues showed what he could do. El Mariachi is an interesting lok into the birth of a big time film maker. It isn't the best movie ever made, but you have to appreciate it for what it is.entertaining film - Pokerguy
I saw this movie before I saw Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Desperado and it was very entertaining. It inspired me to watch the other two when at first I was not interested. The low budget quality of the film does not take away from the movie, in fact it adds to the overall impression of the film. This is a smart and intriguing film that will have you on the edge of your seat. A definate must see.How it all began - Arctic_Jet
After seeing Desparado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, I really wanted to see this to see how it all began. I truely enjoyed it.
For an indepentant movie shot with an amizingly low budget this was a great movie. Sure it doesn't compare to the next two movies, but as a true fan, you will enjoy this.
The 10 minute film school bonus gave some great insight on how to make a movie for $7000. That budget is amazing. Bedhead was enjoyable to. For anyone trying to make movies with no money - this would be very inspiring.
An entertaining movie when you understand it's filming context.
