Exodus
"Poignant, suspensful, harrowing and timely." --CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Inspired by Leon Uris' international best seller, this "extraordinarily moving" (The New Republic) chronicle of the rebirth of a people and the establishment of a nation is the ultimate experience in human drama. Nominated for three Academy Awards and winner for Best Score, Exodus is an "exciting, dramatic, scenic, panoramic, and deeply moving" (New York Daily News) masterpiece.
Ari Ben Canaan (Paul Newman), a commander of the Israeli underground, manages to lead 600 Jews from the detention camps of Cyprus onto a large freighter bound for Palestine. But British forces soon learn of his plan and insist that they turn back. Undaunted, Ari and his passengers refuse to give up, risking their lives for the greater cause of Israeli independence.

Wears well - Tango_Chuck
A very young Paul Newman stars in this 1960 movie based on Uris' book of the same title. You can read the story line elsewhere.
Quite often, older movies seem really corny when seen on the modern screen. This is not the case for this movie, with a few minor exceptions. There is a love sub-plot involving Newman, but he is too wrapped up in his zeal of being Ari Ben Canaan, the Haganah officer to get too involved... this seems fairly realistic.
There is lots of action (the secret boarding of the ship in Cyprus, the prison break from Acre) plus lots of drama (e.g., hunger strike; death of doctor, young girl old uncle and Arab friend) all in a historical setting.
Despite its age, this is a movie that has worn well.Interesting snapshot of Israeli history - angelicalost
Blue-eyed blondePaul Newman isa Jewish heron dreamed up by an American writer... it's hard to forget he's an American playing a Jew. But he's easy on the eyes and plays the part with enough passion - not overboard.
I found the historical snapshot interesting butthe movie would be more hardcore where it made today... the hunger strike on the Exodus was very cosmetic..the bravery of the mothers poignant.. and poignant more to see that there was a time Israeli & Palestinian lived side by side in peace - inter-married, formed lifelong friendships..
