Fallen
Detective John Hobbes is searching for a criminal he's already met... already caught... and already killed.
Homicide detective John Hobbes pursues a killer down a bustling sidewalk. There she is: a small, middle-aged woman. No wait: the killer is the timid man beside her. Now it's someone else. It's all and none of them. Because the murderer Hobbes seeks is a demon passing from one host to another with a brush of an overcoat or touch of a hand.

A cop/demon thriller. What a great premise, and what an entertaining movie!
Well cast and acted (is Denzel ever bad?), and well written. It would have been easy to make a complete mess of this story; I mean, how often have you seen a movie with a great premise that turned out to be a bad movie? It happens.
I think it was as well done as it could have been given the difficulty of combining a multiple murder investigation story with a demonic possession story. The film was well paced and unfolded smartly, and spared us the usual Hollywood sappy ending.
I watched this film while sick with a bad cold (like there is such thing as a good one) and had no problem staying awake and attentive during the entire 2 hours. It was the first time in 2 days I had accomplished that! Highly recommended.Good premise - weak execution - Ubik
These other reviewers are a bit over-zealous, I think. 5 stars? If Seven is 5 stars, what is this?
Look - this movie just doesn't quite work. And it should - it's got Denzel as the main character, a cool supernatural premise, a Seven-type investigation of a mass murderer....and yet....the whole thing ultimately falls a little flat.
There are a few obvious problems. The Denzel character is the biggest one, He is under written and under acted. The man has absolutely no personality, no past, no fears, no hopes, no quirks, no inner torment, no inner joy, nothing. He's a pawn of the plot, and we never really believe that he actually exists. He is also very unaffected by the weirdo stuff that starts to happen to him. He starts the movie kinda dorky and happy, and ends it that way, and although he goes through the motions of solving the case, he takes everything very much in stride, and doesn't undergo any significant change. If the character, such as he is, is never invested in his life, or this investigation, why should we be?
The other obvious problem is that the movie gives everything away from the beginning. There is a mystery for Denzel, but not for us. Why doesn't the movie allow us to figure it out along with him? The movie almost fails to generate any tension, because everything is already a foregone conclusion.
The basic problem is that the movie never really comes alive. The John Goodman character is cool, and there are one or two vaguely effective creepy sequences, but the tone is flat, the pace is sluggish, the "twists" are mechanical, Denzel (an excellent actor) is sleepwalking, and the end, when it comes, doesn't generate any emotion, It should - again, all of this should work - but it doesn't click. The characters feel pushed around by the plot, rather than like real people. The dialogue is okay, but nothing surprising. And the whole film just feels...well, like I said, it just feels flat. Go see Seven again instead.A great thiller - KW--
I saw this movie a few years ago and it was so good I rented it once again. This flick is a classic tale of good versus evil, and with some great twists and turns, the truly realistic ending keeps you on the edge of your seat. With scenes that make you jump, others that make you cheer, this thriller is a must see for anyone who truly enjoys fear. Do not watch alone!
