Fires Within
"A Fascinating, Steamy Romance." -The Hollywood Reporter
From the director of My Brilliant Career comes this "sizzling romance" (Los Angles Times) featuring Jimmy Smits ("NYPD Blue"), Greta Scacchi (Jefferson in Paris) and Vincent D'Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket) in "a classic romantic triangle [with] emotional impact" (Variety).
When her journalist husband Nestor (Smits) is imprisoned in Cuba for his political beliefs, Isabel (Scacchi) flees the country with her daughter. Saved off the shores of Miami by a fisherman (D'Onofrio), she soon falls deeply in love with her rescuer. But just as she's on the verge of building a life with him, Nestor unexpectedly appears, released from the torturous Cuban prison determined to win his wife and daughter back. Torn between the passion of her present and the love of her past, Isabel must now choose which man will be her future.

Not even the delicious Greta Scacchi can save this movie. Movies are noted for conflict and action and for acting. None of the first two qualities are present in Fires Within, and precious little of the last. You would think the characters in a love triangle would be plagued by emotions that would boil from within to break the facade of their composure. Not here. Jimmy Smits calmly enters a new world and a family he'd abandoned while refusing to reenter a cause he'd passionately believed in, all without a wrinkle of emotion crossing his face or one of exertion marring his shirt. Vincent D'Onofrio loses the love of his life while floating calmly off the waters of Miami, never letting the intensity of his loss disturb the calm of his face. To be honest, Greta Scacchi, always beautiful, is occasionally emotional. However, her resolution to the emotional upheaval is so gentle as to be anticlimactic. These characters control their emotions so tightly that there seems to be no conflict. And where there's no conflict there's not much story.
