Fishing With John
John Lurie knows absolutely nothing about fishing, but that doesn't stop him from undertaking the adventure of a lifetime on "Fishing with John." Traveling with his special guests to the most exotic and dangerous places on earth, John Lurie battles sharks with Jim Jarmusch off the tip of Long Island, goes ice fishing with William Dafoe at Maine's northernmost point, braves the Costa Rican jungle with Matt Dillon, takes Tom Waits to Jamaica, and searches for the elusive giant squid with Dennis Hopper in Thailand. Contains all 6 episodes as seen on the Independent Film Channel and Bravo. "The spirit of the independent filmmaker infuses these expeditions, inspiring us to explore far more than traditional nature or fishing programs. Also, I can write these trips off on my taxes."--John Lurie.

I don't think there is anyway someone could write a review for this, it's SO atmospheric and strange that I think I got a contact high. The furthest thing from a fishing show, I'm sure that's why it was SO enjoyable. I actually feel I now know what it would be like to fish with Denis Hopper, and that's not something anyone really ever needs to know, but after watching this you would accept his request . If you're into weird, and confusing, and questioning the purpose of your viewing choices.....you'll like this.Lon's legs are made of wood, but his feet... are real. - pillowhead
This may well be the best thing I have ever seen in my entire life. While not every moment of every episode is gripping, that only adds to the impact of the strong moments. Which are many.
If you enjoy the underbelly of the entertainment world, you're in for a treat. With eccentric celebrity guests ranging from Willem Dafoe to Jim Jarmusch to Tom Waits, you'll be surprised only by the lack of a Crispin Glover cameo.
Despite the all-star lineup, the real star of the Fishing With John is narrator Robb Webb who ties the whole show together with lines like "The fishermen wake up excited to be alive. They hope for good weather and good luck. Both fisherman are covered with sores and boners."
I can't even imagine how many minds were blown after unknowingly channel surfing to this show during its original TV run.
If the title of this review (another line from our brilliant narrator) doesn't make you chortle a bit, save your time. But I will say this: You're missing out.Very Impressive, very strange - Bernfan
When I first watched this TV show I had no idea who John Lurie was. I simply watched because Tom Waits was one of the guests. A few years later I can look back and see the show as the mind numbing parody that perfectly captures the pace of fishing.
Great narration, fantastic guests.
Recomended for fans of: Jim Jarmusch, Tom Waits, black comedy/parody
Not recomended for fans of: slapstick, White chicks
4.5/5*
