For The Boys
Bette Midler gives the brassiest, sassiest performance of her career as Dixie Leonard... a USO singer whose electrifying stage presence, and flair for outrageous comedy, captivates troops and civilians alike. Teamed up with America's beloved song and dance man, Eddie Sparks (James Caan), the whole world becomes Dixie's stage through three very different wars, and 50 years of music and memories, laughter and tears. All of it... For The Boys.

A great performance by Midler.... - Cricri7
Bette Midler is one of the best actresses of her generation. Like they say in the business, she is a triple threat..she acts, sings and dances. For they boys tells the story of a big band type singer that entertained the troops during the war. Her and James Caan have an act where they sing and do comedy. The movie is funny, touching and has great music numbers. This movie flew under the radar when it came out but I think it deserved more recognition.James Caan? He's no Bob Hope. - RobinInSaskatchewan
Bette Middler's Dixie is saucy, funny, and doesn't take nothing from nobody, pretty much how I'd expect Bette Middler to be. But James Cann? James Caan is a fine actor, but he lacks the charisma to pull off this Bob Hope type character - terribly one dimensional, poor Bette, she had to act with a straw dummy. The premise is great, and the first half of the movie is fairly fantastic - especially Dixie's entertainment of the troops in Britain and in Africa, but the wheels eventually just fall off. And the end, well, let's just say, fast-forward is your best friend.Entertaining the home viewer troops - Radio_Jane
This movie was a long time in coming. The glory days of entertaining and the story of uso troopers makes for some wonderful entertaining, and too few people know about the Hopes, Jolsons, bennys and all the others that served their coutry by serving their troops. many people believe that this was a thinly veiled biopic on Bob Hope, but those who know his history will be able to see that this isnt. Midler, gives a bombastic performance as she always does, although if she was deliberately trying to be Martha Raye (Who claims the movie was a virtual rip off of her life) she missed by a little. however, this is a truly entertaining film, a story of a time that everyone should remember, but sadly is often forgotten
