Fort Apache, The Bronx
"Newman's most dramatic and realistic performance." -New York Magazine
In a bombed-out wasteland stands a police station - less a precinct house than a fort in hostile territory. Outside its walls are the murders, the riots, the drugs, and the everyday lives that texture the bleak urban landscape. Inside, amidst corruption and indifference, each officer does what he must to survive his tour of duty in Fort Apache, The Bronx.
This controversial, hard-hitting feature stars Paul Newman as the tough, tired Officer Murphy. His performance sets the tone of a film which moves from reality to romance, from comedy to great desolation of spirit, from demoralization to hope.
A rewarding dramatic experience.

This movie really represents the time it was made (81). You can see similarities to other police movies of the time (Serpico) as well as TV shows before and after. In fact, I believe this was the inspiration for Hill Street Blues. The story involves a police precinct in the Bronx and how the officers there have learned to cope with the high levels of crime and poverty in dealing with the residents. However, there precarious position is greatly affected by the arrival of a new police chief (Ed Asner) that results in heightened crime, rioting and increased tension between the police and residents.
Paul Newman is excellent, as usual, and fans of police shows/Newman should not miss this. My review of three stars is mainly based on the relative slow nature of the plot and many unresolved story lines. Having said this, its a good movie that's well acted. In particular, Danny Aeillo, as a corrupt office, stands out.A classic! - Cricri7
Everyone should zip this movie, it sure is a classic! It is an excellent movie and Paul Newman sure is easy on the eyes...god was he handsome!
It tells the story of a cop, played by Newman, caught in the daily life of Fort Apache, one of the toughest precincts in the Bronx. Ed Asner plays the captain of the precinct and I wonder why that actor never caught more publicity because he is excellent. You always believe in the roles he plays. This movie is worth seeing for the first time for the younger generations!
