I placed the order at zip when the black version came out, because the critics said how great the original was. It really wasn’t.
Hugh Grant was very young and adorable. His stammering sweetness was brand new to the world back then and must have knocked it senseless. Andie McDowell’s smile is radiant. But the plot was offensive. Apparently, a man finds no meaning without the most lovely woman, and all she must contribute is a radiant smile. To be fair, the character was also warmly accurate and frank about her abundant sexual history, and McDowell also possesses a hugely attractive relaxed dignity. But that’s the only justification offered for her attractions. Oh, she might have had a posh job once, and she was very attractive to rich older men.
So, the plot was offensive. But the film offered four genuine gifts. Firstly, we got to feel intimate with two such attractive people. Secondly, the events were set in amazing, lovely and fascinating English venues. Thirdly, the circle of friends were vivid and touching. But probably most of all, the W.H. Auden poem read at the funeral smacks you like a sledgehammer to the forehead with painfully apt and vivid grief. After bawling like a baby from the poem, you could be forgiven for being fooled into thinking the film had affected you.
And I realized about 2/3 through that I had seen it before. Doh on me, and doh on them for being forgettable.
So, 4 stars for the 4 gifts, less 1 for being offensive.Four Weddings and a Funeral - djfunkybob
I do feel this is one of those films that I’ve appreciated more as I’ve gotten older. There are plenty of classic scenes of overt humour like Atkinson’s nervous priest and Grant literally running late to a wedding after sleeping in. However, I enjoyed the subtleties of observing the profound impact of lifelong friends and the intoxication of chance encounters just as much. This film is what kick started Grant’s career. He delivers his trademark charm and wit, but it’s the marriage of his delivery and Curtis’ superb script that makes it seem like these could be your friends and that could be you battling fate head on for your one true love.Four parts laughter, one part tears - Lady_L
For those who like British humour, this is a must see! Great, classic plot line of love-at-first-sight mixed with how-do-you-get-by-without-your-crazy-but-well-meaning-friends gives this delightful movie its own character. As with any British comedy, throw in a seductive American and let the good times flow!
