Ever wonder what is must be like to be Frank Stallone? Daniel Baldwin? Dee Dee Pfiefer? Living in the shadow of a more famous sibling, when you want a career in the same field, can't be easy.
This movie explores that sort of family dynamic, with a naturally talented, successful folk singer, Georgia (Mare Winningham), and her less talented, struggling to be famous sister, Sadie (Jennifer Jason Leigh).
But this movie is also about much more than that. Sadie is an addict. Her need to perform is about her need for acceptance and love. She is a bottomless pit, always needing, always taking, always wanting.
Georgia has all but given up on her. She's seen her routine time and again, and has grown tired of it. Sadie is exhausting. She tries to encourage her, but it's patronizing, because she never really expects Sadie to succeed, musically or otherwise.
There is a moment in the movie, when Georgia invites Sadie to perform at a concert. Sadie is butchering the song, but she's giving a powerful performance of raw emotion. Georgia takes the stage and joins the performance, attempting to spare Sadie her humiliation. The look on Sadie's face says everything.
This has been their whole relationship - Georgia bailing out Sadie, and Sadie hating her for it, but needing her at the same time.
