Grace Of My Heart
Come along on a spirited fifteen-year journey that follows songwriting sensation Denise Waverly(Illeana Douglas) who struggles to escape the shadow of pop-music icons and ultimately emerges a singer in her own right. From the late 1950s doo-wop era to the psychedelic seventies, Denise's experiences in life and adventures in romance stir her genius and inspire the rich melodies that sustain a music empire.

This movie is loosely based upon the life of singer/songwriter Carole King, who started her career by writing songs for other performers.
Real life permeates Grace of My Heart in several forms, such as Turturro's character who invites comparisons to both Phil Spector and Don Kirshner, while The Luminaries' Doris Shelley suggests both Shirley Owen and Doris Coley of The Shirelles. Also, former teen duo, David and Andrew Williams (nephews of crooner Andy Williams), are featured as Everly Brothers soundalikes. Similarly, Bridget Fonda has an extended cameo as Kelly Porter, a dewey faced ingenue not unlike Lesley Gore, known for bubblegum angst like "It's My Party" and "You Don't Own Me." The lush ballad "My Secret Love" hints at Porter's lesbianism in a nod to Gore's own professed sexuality. Not incidentally, Gore herself co-wrote the song, which is sung on record by Miss Lily Banquette of retro-lounge band Combustible Edison. Furthermore, the radio moniker of Davison's character, John Murray, evokes memories of Murray the K. Just as in real life Murray the K was an early, ardent supporter of The Beatles, in the film John Murray explains to Denise Waverly how The Fab Four are about to revolutionize the music industry.grace of my j.mascis - MtheM
so i was running a search for movies that featured the man behind dinosaur jr and insane-o punk band deep wound, and i came across this one. i ordered purely on the fact that there would be a cameo of jay for like 2 minutes. it was more than worth it.
the movie is about the 60s pop star music industry. by this point in american culture, music developed into quite a get rich or die trying lucrative business. there was a great disparatity between those who made it, and those who didnt.
the protagonist in the movie is a young woman with a real knack for writing a popular tune. only problem is, women were not in high demand in the music industry for actually presenting songs. so she was forced to write for others.
this trend in her life is maintained as she becomes a secondary figure to a brian wilson like character. she is forced to be his muse, and celebrate his downward spiralling life, until finally he cracks, and she goes on her own.
through perserverence, the moral of the story is learned that good things come to those who wait.
this movie was a real surprise. it was enjoyable if you have any interest in the biz, the era, or the people whose lives are hinted at in this shakey time piece.
...and j. mascis is in it for a minute.
