Grumpier Old Men
Still Yelling. Still Fighting. Still Ready For Love.
The more things change, the more they hilariously stay the same in Wabasha, Minnesota. The uncatchable fish named Catfish Hunter grows fatter. The wisecracks, zingers and putdowns pile up like freshly raked leaves. And the Grumpy Old Men become grumpier in this delightful sequel.

A good sequel has to have enough connection with the original to feel familiar, but also enough originality to make it worth watching. "Grumpier Old Men" fails in originality, but it's not a bad movie. Filled with a galaxy of old pros who know what they're doing, it couldn't be bad. The performances are excellent, and the movie's worth watching just for the cast alone. It's the story that falls down.
You can only watch a couple of old men insult each other for so long before it becomes tiresome. John and Max spent the entire first movie doing that. "Grumpy Old Men" was a very funny movie, but listening to them call each other "Putz" and "Moron" has lost its appeal. Like the original, the men of Wabasha are fixated on fishing, and intent on catching "Catfish Hunter" – a giant catfish who lives in the lake. Like the original, a beautiful woman shows up in town and distracts everyone from their fishing. It's all too familiar. Then, where there does seem to be promising originality, it ends up not being sufficiently developed.
The budding romance between John's dad and Maria's mother had comedic potential, but the two ended up only having 2 or 3 scenes together, and the "stop the restaurant" campaign could have been the comedic centrepoint of the movie, but in the end, all we got was about 10 minutes of what were essentially vignettes of the various things John and Max tried to do to stop Maria. The romance between Max and Maria wasn't as interesting as the competition for Ariel in the first movie, because there wasn't any competition for Max, and the other highlighted story was the romance between Jacob and Melanie - and my reaction to that was "who really cares?"
I give the movie credit for the wedding twist at the end which I have to confess I didn't see coming, and the cast did a great job. Unfortunately they can only work with the story they're given, but on the strength of the good performances this is worth watching.Grumpier Old Men - p98l256
Loved this movie. Sophia Loren does add a bit of spice to the movie. Her mother is hilarious when matched with Jack Lennon's dad. This is a fantastic sequel to "Grumpy Old Men". What a genius matching Walter Matthau and Jack Lennon together as in the past with the Odd Couple. The sad ending with the death of Jack's dad brings a touch of reality to the whole movie. Loved it.
