Grumpy Old Men
The Best of Enemies Until Something Came Between Them. A Fifty-Year Fight.
Next door neighbors John Gustafson and Max Goldman are Grumpy Old Men. And since they're played by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, they're also Funny Old Men. Pairing up again in this hilarious and heartwarming story of neighborhood curmudgeons whose long-running feud becomes an all-out rivalry when an attractive widow (Ann-Margret) moves into the house across the street.
Snowy Minnesota provides the setting as Max and John unleash an uproarious blizzard of practical jokes and zingers.

This movie will be a classic, great writing and great acting. This is a comedy that is so funny with the childish behavior of Max and John. Who gets the girl is the theme of this movie but with all the laughs through out the movie it adds to how far these two will go. This movie also has the great Burgess Meredith in it and he's got some of the best lines in movie. You must watch the out takes during the credits and you will laugh so hard your eyes will water. The sequel is just as good too.Filled With Laughs - revsdd
I don't think that Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthua get the credit they deserve as a comedy team, but anyone who watches this movie will understand just how perfectly suited they are to each other in this kind of movie. They are two veteran actors who never lost their touch, and Matthau's death a while back is a real loss.
Here, they play - what else - two grumpy old men who also happen to be neighbours (Lemmon as John Gustafson and Matthau as Max Goldman) who have been carrying on a feud all their adult lives which heats up when a beautiful woman (Ann Margaret as Ariel Truax) they're both interested in moves in across the street. You don't really need any more details than that, except to know that this is wonderfully funny stuff.
There are a couple of things to note though. Burgess Meredith has a hilarious part (more than a cameo but less than a starring role) as John's sex-obsessed 91 year old father. (Hearing that Ariel has moved in he asks with wide eyes "Have you mounted her yet?") And, in all honesty, I have to confess that the only thing I didn't like about this movie was the performances by Darryl Hannah and Kevin Pollak as the children of John and Max respectively. I didn't think either one of them added anything to the movie with their performances, nor did I think their characters were necessary.
Still, it's a funny, funny movie.Funny comedy for adults - ivarknut
This movie is a funny comedy that both adults and 'adults at heart' can enjoy.
Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon play neighbours who have been rivals since they were 10 years old. The rivalry started because of a girl, and this movie takes place just as a new woman is moving into the neighbourhood, Ann-Margret.
The rivals start fighting over who will win over the new neighbour, and there are plenty of jokes and hilarious situtations that occur. Who will win?
I wish they made more movies like this, funny but not childish.
