Anthony Hopkins stars in this mystery revolving around a successful criminal lawyer who decides to bump off his wife (Blythe Danner) due to the sizable alimony demands she made in their divorce proceedings. In order to satisfy her provisions, Arthur Jamison (Hopkins) would be forced to forfeit all of his assets and succumb to financial devastation. But rather than face a fiscal fiasco, Jamison comes to the conclusion that he must get rid of his wife, so he can keep his money. The only problem? He must think of a fool-proof plan for the perfect murder to keep his life in tact—the money, his mistress, his assets—all of it. To do this, Hopkins' character creates an alter ego, who devises murder plots and then mentally acts them out—systematically disassembling them to reveal their flaws, until he stumbles upon the perfect plan. But because the film doesn't follow the ordinary constraints of chronological time, reality slips seamlessly into dreams—providing plenty of plot twists that lead to an ending that is nothing short of intriguing.
