Happiness
The search for happiness connects lonely lives in this subversively funny new film from Todd Solondz (Welcome to the Dollhouse). Meet three sisters at the center of a struggle with the secret demons of middle class perfection. There's Joy, who is rebounding from a break-up with her latest loser boyfriend; Helen, a glamorous writer looking for drama in a relationship with a slovenly obscene phone caller; and then there's Trish, the housewife who appears to have it all, including a shrink husband who has a secret obsession which he manages to hide from his family and friends.

There were some fine performances in this film, but I couldn't recommend it. I consider myself to be liberal and pretty open-minded, but I have to admit that I was disgusted at times. Because of what happens with kids in this film--nothing's seen but it's very clear what happened, and there's an awful conversation between a child and an adult--there should probably be a more specific warning. Maybe it isn't as bad if you're not a parent?Child molesters need a "Feel Good" movie? - SStones
The movie doesn't just touch on all the taboo subjects that the writers have interest in, but explore them and portray them as graphically as they feel they can get away with. Each character has at least one extreme flaw that counterbalances their (Fairly one dimensional) good trait. An interesting idea for a movie, but taking it to the extreme where "the man that diddles his kid's friends is a good guy" because he's the only one who's actively honest with his kid is a stretch that certainly makes me fear for the kids around the writer's neighborhood.
The acting is awesome, Philip Seymour Hoffman usually is and it was good to see the other adults manage to act well. What impressed me was how good the kid was. That would have been a very difficult role for a seasoned, adult actor and the kid was great.
Very dark humour, but I did catch myself laughing out loud at a couple of the darker witticisms.
Very creepy movie. Two words: awk ward - KeithTalent
A very awkward, uncomfortable comedy/drama revolving around the lives and more accurately the sex lives of three sisters. There is rape, paedophilia, dirty phone calls, and lots of masturbation and while it is uncomfortable to watch in parts, at the same time I found seeing all of the different characters' sexual psychoses kind of fascinating. Dylan Baker was amazing as the extremely confused Father of a confused son and really everyone else was very good as well (lots of familiar faces in this one). Can's say it's a movie I will be watching again anytime soon, but it was certainly an interesting film.
