Harold And Maude
A classic cult film that features one of the screen's most unlikely pairs. It will defy everything you've ever seen or known about screen lovers. Bud Cort is Harold, a young man bored with wealth but interested in death. And Ruth Gordon is Maude, a wonderful old rascal who can see nothing but good intentions in the world. Hal Ashby (Coming Home, Being There) directed from Colin Higgin's (Foul Play) first script. An outrageously funny and affecting film that proves love has no boundaries. Cat Stevens provides an uplifting musical score.

I love this movie. My mother showed it to my best friend and me when we were thirteen and I've been watching it ever since! We thought it was so hilarious, I think 13 is the best age to enjoy this movie.
The crazy characters and suicide attempts are so much fun and I think that perhaps this movie speaks more to young teenagers than it does to anyone else. As one other critic here said, sometimes for adults the characters seem exagerated. But that's what teens love - they want to be so crazy and out there and shocking that they don't draw a line beyond which behaviour is exagerated. They have this energy and love love of life that they identify directly with Maude. Then they have the rebellion thing going on with their parents so they identify with Harold and wish they could be like him, too. Really, both characters have the same vitality.
We all know that if Harld really WERE suicidal he wouldn't enjoy stagin his fake suicide attempts.
If you have 13 year-old kids - show them this movie!!!!!Definition of a classic... - okobi
This is a great movie. I was thoroughly entertained throughout. Strangely enough, I didn't think that the two main characters where that great. I enjoyed Maude's spacey and sometimes wild moments, but it seemed extremely exaggerated most times. The Harold character has an equally extreme disposition, albeit at the opposite end of the spectrum. My favorite character is Harold's mother. I found her hilarious. She's completely self absorbed and phony. Not once in the entire movie does she actually speak with anyone as much as she talks at them. I thought it was hilarious that she spoke to everyone as though they were inanimate objects.
What I truly loved about this movie was the quality cinematography. There are simply not enough of this type of movie. There were so many perfect shots and scenes! One of my favorites, is when Harold is sitting with his psychiatrist in his sparsely furnished, brightly lit office. The camera is behind the two characters as they sit side by side in dark leather high back chairs. You can only see parts of their heads and arms. The camera sits there behind the two for a while as the their conversation goes on. Perfect! There are quite a few shots like this through out the movie. Unfortunately they seem to come and go much too quickly.Had to write a review - canuck76
This is my first review for Zip after being a member for a year and a half. It is a testament to how completely and unbelievably good this movie is that I felt compelled to write a review. This is a comedy that is reminiscent of Wes Anderson's work, except that it was made 30 years before he started his career, and is 10 times better than anything he has made (and I absolutely love The Royal Tennenbaums and Rushmore). If you love quirky comedies made in a brilliant visual style, you need to rent this film! The characters, the visuals, the editing, and the story all gel together into something magical.
