Hearts In Atlantis
"Two big thumbs up!" -Ebert & Roeper
Beware the low men. Bobby Garfield couldn't possibly know what that means. But before the summer is over, he'll know... and he'll summon depths of courage and forgiveness he never imagined he had.
Anthony Hopkins headlines this nostalgically atmospheric film set in small-town Connecticut in 1960. He portrays Ted Brautigan, a mysterious, psychically gifted loner who becomes a mentor and father figure to Bobby (Anton Yelchin) when he enlists the boy's help in eluding the shadowy figures who seek control of Ted's powers. Directed by Scott Hicks (Shine) and based on the book by Stephen King, Hearts In Atlantis is "a wonderful, wonderful movie" (Joel Sigel, Good Morning America/ ABC-TV).

A great film that is well worth taking the time to watch. Anthony Hopkins is outstanding in his role in this film. This is one of those films that you can watch again and again!
I personally can never get tired of watching this film. The storyline and the score of this film were outstanding.Your money might be better spent purchasing a well-narrated book on tape. - aj79
Hearts in Atlantis begins as another one of those sickening coming of age stories. You know the ones. Characters! It’s about the characters!!! Its clear ten minutes in that there isn’t much story here, the only thing worth looking at is the characters! So why are we running around worrying about the FBI chasing psychics? Or rather why aren’t we worrying? Because even though there is some sort of supposed danger, no one really seems all that concerned about it. The best moments of this film are spent listening to Anthony Hopkins recite coy phrases stolen from some of history’s best authors. So touching and profound is his recitation, that in those moments, one can almost believe this is a good film. But when he stops speaking, you awaken from your reverie to discover you are having a good time only because Hopkins has a soothing voice.Undeniable Winner - c4th
Hearts in Atlantis is based on a Stephen King story within a collection of the same name adapted to the screen by William Goldman (screenwriter) and Scott Hicks (director). It is a coming of age psychological thriller. Now there’s a combination you don’t see often. Some may argue whether this is a true thriller or just drama. Although it never quite breaks loose, there is a prevalent anticipation of unknown dangers and for many that alone is sufficient to escalate suspense and create a thrilling journey.
After turning eleven, Bobby spends a summer reading newspaper articles to Ted Brautigan and keeping his senses pealed for the “Low Men”. Ted is a bit of a recluse who guards his secret talents and carries a mystique. As Bobby enters his adolescent years, Ted fills the void left by his father’s absence but their relationship also releases his psychic awareness and an appetite for love of life.
Many film adaptations of Stephen King’s writing have been good but a few have been misses. This one is a clear cut undeniable winner. Rent and enjoy.
