Heist
"Heist strikes gold." -Jay Carr, The Boston Globe
Getting the goods? Easy. Getting away after the robbery? Veteran thief Joe Moore knows that's always the hard part. But he soon discovers that getting away from a life of crime is the hardest escape of all.
Gene Hackman plays cool-fire Joe, Delroy Lindo portrays his longtime sidekick and Danny DeVito plays the manipulative fence who saddles Joe with one last, difficult job in this ensemble-driven caper centered on an elaborate, split-second snatching of gold ingots by Joe and his crew. Writer/director David Mamet prowls the unsentimental avenues of film noir in a story rife with double-cross, triple-cross and trademark Mamet dialogue. For edgy, synapse-searing entertainment, go where the money is: Heist.

Typical Mamet writing/directing, pushes the edge of believability but works...just barely. Hackman delivers a good character although his delivery seems a bit off at times. Devit makes a credible villain, almost real-world, as he doesn't thinkg of himself as a villain and that carries on the screen. Lots of twists and turns, typical Mamet.first class - Tallen1
This is a first class piece of writing. Gene Hackman does this sort of thing so well and is always enjoyable; in the same way as Clint Eastwood is always enjoyable. The plot is not over complex but the fine detail of how to carry out these, well, crimes is admirable. Most thugs are much too thick to think things through and perhaps it is just as well for society. We can admire the ingenuity even if we do not approve of the reason for it. There was a time when films about criminals showed, in the last reel, that they could not prosper from their malfeasance. Sometimes I think that this was no bad thing. At any rate Heist is a good yarn well told.Golden Moments - filmgeek
David Mamet is best known for his plot twists, con games, and especially his dialogue. In Heist, he excells in all three, creating a classic heist film which, while bringing nothing new to the genre, still packs a fun wallop.
Gene Hackman delivers his usual solid performance. Danny De Vito plays his most slimy character since Batman Begins. Sam Rockwell, Delroy Lindo and Ricky Jay all provide solid supporting performances which enhance the film to no end.
The only drawback to this film is that there is really nothing new here that has not been done in about ten other heist films. The main thing about this movie is that every cliche is done with style and that, more than anything else, is what sets this movie apart as a film to be enjoyed (if not celebrated).
