This movie was hot!
The characters in this movie were all colourful and very interesting. June, the wife who's always angry, in my opinion. Henry...passionate, yet I felt there was cruelty in him. Anais, who seems to be lost in her own awakening. Poor Hugo, can a man be really clueless!
It was a sensual movie, but there were a few scenes that bored me.Odd biographical movie - Coconut_Willy
I must start by saying that I am not really a big fan of such artsy erotic movies but I was curious about it as it was one of the first role for Uma Thurman. It is based on a recount of actual events by one of the main characters (Anais Nin) so one has to assume that it is a true story. It is interesting to see what it might have been like for a struggling writer at a difficult time in history (early '30s) to try to make a living in a foreign country but this main thread is buried in so many layers of weirdness that it ultimately gets lost. Instead, the movie goes into the ever growing needs of Anais Nin to satisfy her sexual fantasies in a world inhabitated by a variety of sideshow characters. The cast is quite good doing an appropriate acting job with a very good dialogue. The sets and locations are very nice, the soundtrack is excellent and the camera work is quite good. If you're a fan of period pieces like this, you might enjoy it but I'm not and I found this movie very long...Artsy. Erotic. Intriguing. - cathyottawa
Based on the memoirs of Anais Nin, this is a story about artistic inspiration, and sexual discovery.
It's very much the story of Anais Nin, and is of coarse told from her point of view.
We journey with her as she becomes sexually awakenned and inspired -by her relasionship with husband Hugo, by her affair with fellow writer Henry Miller, and by her ultimate obsession with Henry's wife, June.
This is very well acted. Uma Thurman shines in her first big role. Maria de Medeiros (Anais) hasn't done much of note since this movie (other than playing Bruce Willis's girlfriend in Pulp Fiction), but I thought she was great. And look for Kevin Spacey in a small part.
It's a sexy film, although, by today's standards, you might be surprised that it almost got an X rating, and created the NC17 rating.
