Well, if you set aside the fact that this movie features abysmal acting; and, if you set aside the fact that the story is muddled and wanders off in about five different directions without ever deciding which way it really wants to go; and, if you set aside the fact that I didn't find a single scene in this movie that was remotely interesting; well, if you set all that aside, this is still a REALLY terrible movie!
I take it that this is supposed to be a love story about rich guy/poor girl. I never really understood for a moment how this romance between Kelley (Chris Klein) and Samantha (Leelee Sobieski) ever got started. The inexplicable romance is made worse by a complete lack of chemistry between Klein and Sobieski. The screenplay (by Michael Seitzman) is dull to the point of stupefying. How Seitzman managed to write the thing without falling asleep is a miracle; that he would think anyone would want to pay to see this is unbelievable.
Did I mention that this is a REALLY, REALLY terrible movie?Pretty Lame - LandPhil
I watched this with my wife who is usually a sucker for sentimental, romance movies but even she thought this was pretty lame. I knew it would be formulaic and predictable but the lengths it went to tug at the viewers heart-strings was just so blatantly obvious that in the end I was just praying for the end to come. Predictable isn't always bad but how you get to the end needs to sustain the viewer without crossing over into the pathetic. Leelee Sobieski and Josh Hartnett are good actors and well cast in this, but Chris Klein has about as much charisma as drywall and when his character needs to be sensitive you can't take him seriously because he just isn't able to get you to believe he's feeling these emotions. The dialogue is typical from the teen romance genre. I think the set up was good in bringing the three leads into a doomed romantic triangle but in the end the screenwriter went for the hoky deathly illness angle to get us to try and care about these characters and failed miserably.
