Hoosiers
"A Wonderful Sports Movie: Hoosiers Works Magic!" -Roger Ebert
Nominated for two Academy Awards, this triumphant tale of a high school basketball teams' long-shot attempt to ascend to the State Championship is filled with edge-of-your-seat suspense and breathless excitement! Featuring "fast-break cinematography that catches the pace of the game" (Washington Post) and intense, heart-rending performances from Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper, Hoosiers redefined the sports movie with a realism and frankness that make you believe in its small-town characters - and cheer for them over and over again.
Hackman is Norman Dale, a basketball coach whose checkered past has led him to a last-chance position with a last-chance team. Made to feel unwelcome by squad members, an icy fellow teacher (Hershey) and townspeople who nearly have him fired, Dale perseveres with a gritty demeanor and an unwavering passion for the game. But winning over the team is only half the battle in a world where small-town teams can end up playing big-time rivals...and a downtrodden outsider can rouse the pride of an entire county. As "a well-made slice of Americana" (Leonard Maltin), Hoosiers "scores big" (Washington Post)!

One of the worst movies ever made. A terrible, not-even-slightly-interesting script filmed in a completely formulaic, manipulative way, populated by phoned-in stock performances that are caricatures of each actor's worst other screen portrayals. Not one redeeming feature or one genuine moment. Plus the worst music soundtrack any film could ever be cursed with. Title should have been "How Is It Possible To Make A Totally Boring Sports Movie? Just Watch!" All I learned about basketball game strategy from this was "Pass 4 times before shooting;" heaven help us.Wow - stuntman2625
I'm a huge sports movie fan and can usually find something good about any movie. But WOW was this movie bad. I don't know how this movie has received such great reviews for so many years. Not only was the plot itself horribly boring, but the basketball references and actual playing of the sport made it unbearable for me to watch. I know it was based in the 50's, but come on! I wish I had more than two thumbs so I could point them all down.Over-rated Dud - FilmJunkie
A dull film about a small town, all-white basketball team that makes it to the Indiana State Championships. I am not much one for sport's movies, however some have touched me in the past. This snorer starring Gene Hackman was not worth my time. Blah.
