Hurlyburly
At the very juncture where Hollywood meets the mountains, where the almost-rich and not-yet-famous live on cheap thrills and heady ambition while searching for true love and redemption, Eddie (Stunningly portrayed by Sean Penn) and his three best friends engage in a wild life of witty repartee and snappy come-backs, of ex-wives and future lovers, of hard partying and late nights, of sex, lies and self-obsession.

I really liked this movie. Usually, people take the time to filter their thoughts before speaking, but in this movie there is so much dialogue that by the end of the movie, it left me with the feeling that I knew these people. Strong characters and a stellar cast made this movie one of my faves. All head, no heart - NickDeWolfe
The positive reviews of this movie are by people who recognize what the filmmakers were trying to accomplish. I would argue that whether or not they were successful is immaterial, it was a bad idea. If this was a film school project, or some kind of Hollywood bet, it would make sense. But as entertainment, it fails to engage. There is no plot, which I know was done for effect, but it still means they give us these highly detailed, beautifully executed characters, and don't develop them. After the first 20 minutes there is nothing new to hold your interest, they just do a masterful job of beating a dead horse. No one will argue the talent involved, just the motivation. So if you think it is cool to sit through something that is totally unentertaining just to feel culturally superior, and to reaffirm in your own mind that you are soficticated enough to "get it" then by all means, this is a great movie to get your snob on with. Otherwise I am going to have to say that the Emperor has no clothes, and this is film isn't actually worth watching. Some of the best films are about nothing - kap0n3
Not only are some of the best films about nothing, they may also feature characters so lacking in redeeming features you'd throw yourself under a train in order to avoid them. Here, there's not one but seven self indulgent, self obsessed losers who seem to exist solely to force their neuroses on other people. Eddie and Mickey are casting agents who live together in the Hollywood Hills. Their 'friends' are Phil, a cocaine addled actor, and Arnie, an obsequious producer. There's also Darlene, sometimes Eddie's girlfriend, sometimes, Mickey's; Donna, a hitch hiker; and Bonnie, a single parent stripper. During the course of the film they drink, get stoned, go to a funeral, oh, and talk at interminable length about, well, nothing. Mickey's opening gambit is - 'So, Phil, your personal life's a shambles, how's your career?' and that pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the movie. The characters are so unpleasant, so self obsessed, it's hilarious. The constant repetition of motifs - alcohol, drugs, profanity, sex, paranoia, and morbid introspection, goes beyond exploitation of those things, and paints a very black picture of the male psyche. Few actors are prepared to appear as repellent on screen as Sean Penn is.
