Husbands And Wives
"Fiercely Funny! A Groundbreaking Film."-Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
Woody Allen's critically-acclaimed comedy is a hilarious game of martial musical chairs, as two New York couples re-examine their marriages and find themselves wanting more. Allen stars with Mia Farrow as a long-married couple whose own relationship starts to crumble when their best friends, played by Sydney Pollack and Judy Davis, announce they're separating. They immediately pair up with younger, sexier paramours and enjoy again the pleasures of fresh passion. but smoldering resentments and unexpected jealousies soon rise to the surface, erupting in savage humor and hilariously unpredictable reunions. A directional tour-de-force, "Husbands and Wives" is a comic valentine from an American Master.

No one does the challenges of middles aged relationships quite likely Woody Allen. His characters are living things, withhall the painful sad flaws that you would expect from middle aged, privleged intellectuals. The profile of the relationships in Husbands and Wives feel so authentic and perfect. The comedy comes from the awkwardness of situations that feel real. The is a surprisingly great comic drama.Wives - stand out performances - ultygirl
In a twisted way, knowing how Woody Allen's real life has unfolded, he seems to speak a little of his personal truths in each of his movies.
Judge for yourself but this one seems to be a personal attack on Mia Farrow veiled in his slant that her character is a women that gets what she wants even if she "appears" sympathetic and caring because underneath, she's passively aggressively convincing men that they want what she wants. And what she wants is an end to her marriage and another man - an action morally contemptuous to most.
The other female character (played by Judy Davis) who seems neurotic and critical (I believe a projection of Woody Allen himself) ends up being the one self-described as best suited for a loyal marriage. Well, we know in their off-stage lives this was not the case. :)
I adored how uncomfortable some of the performances made me feel, the feelings were so tangible and real. There was even somewhat of a personal review in the movie masquerading as a review by Juliette Lewis of Wood Allen's character's new book.
I liked the pace of this movie. From some of camera work flow to the trips forward and back in time, to sessions on the therapist's couch, this movie will keep your attention.
Highlight: Performance by Judy DavisInteresting Take on Marriage - FilmJunkie
A very interesting look at marriage and how it can break down when one concentrates too closely on its faults.
Mia Farrow and Woody Allen star as a couple whose relationship is falling apart just as their close friends, Judy Davis and Sydney Pollack, have decided to separate.
Woody attempts an affair with Juliette Lewis, in one of her best roles, and shows just how unrealistic he has now become with such a lovely young woman.
One of the best modern Allen films, this is one to watch. I very much recommend it.
