Hush
Don't Breath A Word
Jessica Lange and Gwyneth Paltrow star in this intricate, intense thriller about a young bride who becomes the emotional pawn of her controlling mother-in-law.
Without a family of her own, Helen is initially charmed by her impressive mother-in-law and the sprawling estate where she lives. But behind the storybook scene lie dangerous secrets and dark motives. With the chilling undertones of Rosemary's Baby, HUSH is a nightmarish lullaby of a maternal love that leads into madness.

That's what I felt like I was watching here. From the plot, to the characters, to the dialogue, this was very much a soap opera. It reminded me of one of those badly written, yet wildly popular novels by Jackie Collins or V.C. Andrews or something.
Jessica Lange plays this character of the demented stepmother as though she walked out of a 1940s movie with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.
Johnathon Schaech, well, let's check his resume. Before this film, he did Poisen Ivy 2, and after this film, went on to do Roadhouse 2, and 8MM 2. Enough said. He's terrible, but good looking. The perfect soap opera actor.
Gwyneth Paltrow does what she can with the material, and she's likeable as always.
Despite this film's many flaws, I still give it three stars, because you know what? I've watched soap operas, and I've read V.C. Andrews. There's a simple pleasure to be gained from this type of entertainment, and I enjoyed this on a soap opera level. It's Fine - Poustman
I suggest you ZipList it and watch it on an off-night. It's a step or two above made-for-TV, it's watchable, but I don't think anyone was particularly impressed. Very journeyman-level everything. For a first-time feature director, good job. It had a few memorable moments, although there were some glitches in the character choices that I wish had been handled better. Having written scripts I sympathize with the desire to get it done, but it seemed to me a little more story development at a few crucial points would have improved this film quite a bit. But no big deal-- either for or against the movie.
