In & Out
Welcome to Greenleaf, a picture-postcard Indiana town where the high school is the proud focus of attention and "alternative lifestyle" means you bowl on alternate Tuesdays. But on the night of the Oscars telecast, the town's--and the world's--center of attention is Greenleaf teacher Howard Brackett. A former student who's now a superstar actor tells an audience of millions that Howard is gay. Poor Howard. He's outted when he didn't know he was in!

The ending was weak and did not live up to the rest of the film - moviemonger
In & Out is a lightweight comedy that tackles the serious issue of sexual identity. After being publicly "outed," the main character spends the rest of the film struggling with his sexuality in a comical way, but it all has real consequences -- for him, his friends, and his family. Expect plenty of teasing and occasionally derogatory humor -- though it's mainly used in an ironic way to poke fun at the teaser, and the movie's overall tone is good-natured and well-balanced.A Mildly Amusing Movie That Turns Ridiculous At The End - revsdd
In 1997 Hollywood wasn't quite at the point of openly celebrating homosexuality, so give some credit to those who put this movie together for having shown a bit of courage. Too bad credit couldn't be given them for having put together a really good movie! "In & Out" is the story of Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline) - a small town high school English teacher who on the eve of his wedding is outed by a former student who happens to win an Oscar and who then has to go through a period of self-discovery as he comes to terms with being homosexual. That was the first problem with this movie: Howard didn't really have to turn out to be gay. The movie would have been funnier (and perhaps even more thought provoking) had Brackett remained defiantly straight in spite of the stereotypically gay aspects to his life and the town's belief after the Oscar speech that he was gay. (In fact, I thought that identifying him as gay given the presence of those stereotypes might actually have been rather insulting to the gay community, as well as to straight men who like poetry and believe in dressing neatly!)
Kline was decent enough in the role, and largely carried the film. Aside from him, most of the other cast members (although fine actors) were people not really noted for their success on the big screen. Folks like Tom Selleck and Wilford Brimley and Bob Newhart are good actors but not big movie stars. I actually thought that the funniest (if very small) role in the movie was that of the super model Sonya, played by an actress named Shalom Harlow (Speaking of stereotypes, I loved her oh-so stereotypical model line "I promised to do that photo shoot this afternoon. I have to shower and vomit!") In the end, what really turned me off about this movie was the ridiculous ending, starting with the graduation ceremony, and ending with the unnecessary nuptials.)
Basically, I got a few chuckles out of this but nothing more. What a joke. - movie_goer
In and Out is a sterotypical film, where gays dance around and love Barbara Streison and completly mock them for enjoying English literature and the fine arts. The fact is not every gay is like such, although the film tried to make it work i found doing anything but watch this film better use of time. one thing they did get right was how judgemental the people get even those closest to you, It's not right or far but people terminate your job is your out or in the closet.. This film was choppy and missed the whole point of trying to be funny. I felt that they enforced humor rather then allow it to pave the films light hearted side naturally.
