This version has an extra minute of sexy footage, that was not included in the theatrical release.
Everything You Know About Desire Is Dead Wrong
In the underbelly of lower Manhattan, Frannie Avery (Meg Ryan), a reserved English professor, becomes obsessed after seeing more than she should of an impassioned couple. After the young woman turns up dead, Frannie is questioned by a homicide detective (Mark Ruffalo) who draws her into a liberating but disturbing erotic encounter. As the body count rises, familiar suspects begin to emerge. "Meg Ryan is dynamite in the most explosive performance of her career," (David Moss, FOX TV).

Why I hated this movie...... - Hobgoblin
First of all, I should make it clear that I don't like serial killer thriller movies to begin with and should never have rented this one in the first place. If you enjoy the genre maybe you'd like this one. Anyway, I was off to a bad start.
Second, the acting was very, very poor. Horrible in fact. I couldn't connect with any of the characters. Meg Ryan was emotionless, which made you not care what happened to her. This completely takes away the adrenaline rush that comes from watching thrillers.
Finally, the plot really sucked. Don't read farther if you're going to watch it, because I'm about to spoil the plot. One main character and two peripheral characters are set up as the potential serial killer, but it turns out to be an implausible fourth person that didn't make any sense.
As for the "sexy" bits, boring........When characters have no emotion, with such poor acting, it was just some meaningless sex.
I'd have given this movie a zero if I could.

What a nice surprise!
I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie, I remembered reading really bad things about it when it was released, but my curiosity got the best of me. And I'm glad it did!
By no means is the movie perfect, but it has a very effective, very individual look and feel to it. The murder-mystery aspect doesn't really work, in my opinion. The fact that there's a serial killer targeting women adds a level of urgency to what's going on, but I never even bothered thinking about whodunit, I just think it's besides the point. The main story, which is really about heterosexual relationships, is much more interesting. All the actors are terrific, especially the two leading ladies - Meg Ryan delivers the kind of cold, insular performance that Nicole Kidman specializes in, but with Ryan, there's a certain humanity and gravity that Kidman doesn't have that makes her character fascinating. Ditto for Jennifer Jason Leigh, playing a quintessential Jennifer Jason Leigh character but with a certain looseness this time. It's a very natural performance, and she adds much more to her character than what's written.
I say give this one a shot - it was unfairly slammed at the time of its release and I hope it gets a critical revival as the years go on.so sexy... - musgrave
I loved this movie so much! Mark Ruffalo gives a stunningly sexy performance. I thought the story and the characters were wonderful and all of the actors did an amazing job. Jennifer Jason Leigh is dynamic and Meg Ryan plays her character so honestly. This will be a fave of mine to re-watch for a long time.
