Emma (A&E) - TheWiz
The ebst adaptation of thie Jane Austen novel I have had the pleasure of viewing in a long time. Mark Strong delivers the goods as Kate Bekinsale is very convincing in her role of match maker. I'm presuming yoou know the plot as this is classic literature. The priod surroundings are well done and this could have easily made it to the big screen. Great family movie with many lessons in humanity. Teens and up.A great adaptation - kristadb
I love the book "Emma" and found that this is a good adaptation. It was less flashy then the Hollywood-style one with Paltrow and is more dramatic. It still made me smile at the silliness of the match making and I could felt Emma's frustration with her situation. This is a good movie to introduce someone to period pieces.Beckinsale delivers a performance ripe with contradictions - a perfect Emma! - Winkle
Unlike the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Austen's novel, this film features a more serious bent and, though covering a light topic, shows a more passionate depth, akin that in Pride & Prejudice. Beckinsale is perhaps less humourous than Paltrow, but conveys the Emma's contradictions more effectively; one can feel her warmth and yet be frustrated by her total lack of tact, sensitivity, and in many cases, sincerity. Knightly is portrayed much more seriously in this film, and Mark Strong smolders with that "Darcy"-like disdain Colin Firth made so famous in Pride & Prejudice.
Overall, if you like the story of Emma, you'll appreciate this version. Most interesting is to watch both versions and decide which interpretation you find most appealing.
