Laurel Canyon
Somewhere between Hollywood and the rest of the world...
Academy Award winner Frances McDormand (Almost Famous, Fargo) stars in the sexy and witty story of a hard-living, free-thinking, rock-and-roll record producer who finds herself unexpectedly sharing a house with her straight-laced son and his super-conservative bride-to-be. Written and directed by LIsa Cholodenko (award-winning director of High Art) and also starring Christian Bale (American Psycho), Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor), Natascha McElhene (Solaris) and Alessandro Nivola (Jurassic Park III).

I wasn't expecting much but was drawn into the complexities presented in this film. The straight-laced son, who not only lives in the shadow of his free-spirited mother, but has a girlfriend who is also an accomplished female he cannot impress. The issues of being one's self were dealt with intelligently and convincingly. Kate Beckinsale was a good choice for Alex as she personifies the tightly wound, A type personality. I also really enjoyed Alessandro Nivola. What a cutie!Laurel Canyon - Leland
McDormand's performance is excellent as usual, but the film left me with little else to rave about. The irony of the plot -- uptight, straight son is embarrassed and confused by uber-hip, post-hippie mom -- isn't enough to carry the movie on its own, and I found that the characters were hard to get attached to. The film is aiming for a level of complexity in them that just doesn't feel real. This is especially apparent with the future daughter-in-law's unconvincingly swift conversion from mousey grad student to sultry, pot smoking sex goddess. Laurel Canyon looks good and sounds good in a Sundance sort of way, but its meandering story and empty ending left me wondering what the point of it was. Rent it if you're a McDormand fan and you simply have to see everything she's done; otherwise, go for a better Sundance film like "In The Bedroom."
