Less Than Zero
In a spellbinding dramatic performance, Robert Downey, Jr. portrays Julian, a Beverly Hills brat who has it all: looks, charm, smarts, a rich father and a drug habit. His friend and girlfriend (Andrew McCarthy and Jami Gertz) are trying to help, but Julian's world is crumbling so fast, he might take them out with him. The result is a powerful and compelling story of three kids who started out with everything and are about to wind up with Less Than Zero.

This movie started off slow but I gave it a chance. It's not perfect and the book is supposedly much better, but all I can say is that Robert Downey Jr. does a damn good job. The locations and soundtrack are highlights also. Also, I felt that James Spader played a extremely vicious drug dealer. Scum incarnate. Not perfect but it has some redeeming factors. - vide0dr0id
I think out of all the Brat Pack films this one has been dumped on the most by critics. This is an awful film in nearly every way. The characters are laughably thin, the story immediately tiresome, and the acting is mostly terrible - gosh, Robert Downey Jr. playing a strung-out cokehead; what a stretch! - although Spader's performance shows hints of the great campy, overblown work he's done since (eg, Boston Legal). The movie is also very dated - I assume it captures the atmosphere of upper-crust late-80's LA, but there's nothing in the story makes the locale essential - and this also means that the soundtrack intrudes on any important scene, and we're bombarded with establishing shots of flashy parties and pricey buildings as if we couldn't figure out that these people are rich and live in LA.
