Little Man Tate
"A delicate, compassionate tale!" -The Hollywood Reporter
Jodie Foster (The Accused) "makes an impressive directorial debut" (Tribune Media Services) with Scott Frank's (Out of Sight, Get Shorty) compelling and bittersweet screenplay about a child prodigy caught in the harsh spotlight of fame. Starring two-time Oscar® winners Foster and Dianne Wiest, Little Man Tate is a "stirring and magnificent portrait of the human spirit" (The Hollywood Reporter)!
Fred Tate (Adam Hann-Byrd) is a gifted pianist, a math genius, an incredible artist... and he's only seven years old. But this child prodigy is also adrift. Shunned by his peers and bored by his schoolwork, Fred is stifled by his environment. Desperate to encourage his potential, yet afraid he'll miss out on a normal childhood, his single mom Dede (Foster) reluctantly allows a psychologist (West) to enroll Fred in a school for exceptional children. But when he's rushed headlong into academia, Dede's worst fears are realized - Fred is more isolated and alone than ever. And it's up to Dede to become what little Freddy's been looking for all along... a Mom.

Wonderful Look at a Mother and a Son - Mookie
This is an understated classic that stands the test of time and makes my eyes tear up every time I watch it, kinda like Searching for Bobby Fischer (although Search for BF was better as a whole).
Nothing fancy just a mother who can't fully cope with her son and loves him enough to be able to send him to a place where they can. Some wonderful acting performances and a solid story. The Challenge of Genius. - cathyottawa
How do you raise a genius? What do you do when your grade-school son is smarter than you are?
These are the questions facing single mom DeeDee (Jodie Foster). Adam Hann-Byrd is wonderful as the gifted Fred, a boy wonder who plays concert level piano, is a gifted artist, writes poetry, and is a math whiz.
We follow Fred as DeeDee reluctantly lets him join a program for gifted children. Diane Weist is great as the school director, and Fred's new mentor.
He gets to take college courses (look for Harry Connick Jr as a college student who befriends Fred), and compete in math competitions.
But, genius or not, is Fred ready to handle this new life? DeeDee struggles to find the answers, and to protect her son's fragile emotions.
A heartwarming tale, with a lot of laughs as well. An interesting look the mystery of genius - a world that can be very lonely.
Jodie Foster does a great job in this, her directorial debut. Well done.
