A hilariously dark comedic Faust-like musical from the minds of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, Little Shop of Horrors is so detailed in its imagery, songs and ideas. First of all, the lyrics are smartly funny in such a clever way that only Ashman could have written them. Adding them to Menken's catchy tunes and right off the bat, you have an entertaining musical. Of course, Ashman's screenplay is also filled with one very funny moment after another, but the dramatic moments work very well, too. The chemistry between Audrey and Seymour is touching in a lot of ways and had they kept the original ending, it would have been even more powerful. Of the supporting cast, Steve Martin absolutely steals the show as a sadistic dentist and if you have ever had to endure the tooth-pulling, then his scenes are even funnier and more sadistic than prior to such a surgery. Seymour's Faust journey is what keeps us on our toes and though, it's unfortunate that the film's final cut contains a happy ending and not the exciting "Don't Feed the Plants" finale, Little Shop of Horrors still works incredibly well as a whole.Total Classic - FilmJunkie
The story of man who meets a plant, the plant needs blood and the man needs Audrey, the plant helps him get Audrey and the man helps the plant get blood, until it all comes crashing down.
Rick Moranis ain't no singer, but he pulls it off pretty well as pathetic Seymour. He is dopey, but dark, just right to be able to kill in the name of love.
Steve Martin is dangerous sexy as the doomed dentist boyfriend of Audrey (Ellen Greene). His scene with Bill Murray as the masochistic patient is one of the best in the movie.
In my opinion, this film is all about Ellen Greene as Audrey. She plays dumb and sweet, with a rack for days, but then that voices busts out. This woman can sing. 'Suddenly Seymour' and 'Somewhere That's Green' are my favorite songs because of that voice.
Funny, dark, like a big alive stage with a crazy awesome storyline.

This is my taste. Who doesn't love singing, murderous plants from outer space? This movie was awesome. In fact, it's worth it for Bill Murray's scene alone. Seriously, that guy is awesome. So was Rick Moranis and Steve Martin, for that matter. The performances were hilarious. The music was great, I'm still humming some of the songs. The Audrey II puppet was cool - it makes me kind of miss the days of puppets (vs our current computer animated characters). Even the costumes were fantastic, I loved a lot of Audrey's dresses.
However, I can't help but wish they had stuck to the original ending.
The Opinion: DVD worthy.
