Little Women
"A classic comes to life with humor, passion, beauty and intelligence." - Joy Browne, WOR Radio
With her husband off at war, Marmee (Susan Sarandon) is left alone to raise their four daughters - her "little women." There is the spirited Jo (Winona Ryder); conservative Meg (Trini Alvarado, Paulie); fragile Beth (Claire Danes, Romeo & Juliet); and romantic Amy (played at different ages by Kirsten Dunst [Wag The Dog] and Samantha Mathis [Broken Arrow]). As the years pass, the sisters share some of the most cherished and painful memories of self-discovery, as Marmee and Aunt March (Mary Wickes, The Man Who Came To Dinner) guide them through issues of independence, romance and virtue.

A Warm, Wonderful Classic. - 1writer
A great film version of the book. This is a successful true feel-good movie. The cast (Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, Eric Stoltz to name just a few!) is fresh and play their roles so convincingly. Of course the story is sentimental and sweet, but it is also witty and smart. A wonderful classic that was perfectly remade, leaving none of it's greatness behind.A Fine Adaptation to a Classic - JYC
This adaptation to the beloved story of the March family resonates through generations of young women, especially in North America, which makes it a classic to this day. Girls and women alike will be able to relate to its many themes of love and sisterhood, as well as society and money. Winona's performance as Jo March is endearing. She makes it easy to imagine what life was like for a budding mind who, unlike her sisters, yearned for more than what mid-late 18th century society allowed for women. I'm reminded of a quote by her character in the film, when told she should have been a lawyer due to her argument on why women should vote "I should have been a great many things, Mr. Mayer..." reflecting on, even at such a young age to our standards today, how little opportunities there were for women.
Each performance by the other cast members is appropriate to what the character's persona reflects and complements, as it should Jo's character and story, as she blossoms from young, willfull girl to becoming a woman.A definite classic - BohemiasAngel
I remember seeing this film in theatres when it first came out, thinking I was being dragged to some period piece. Unknownst to me, it was a literary classic and had been made into several other film versions. What I saw was a timeless story with tons of heart and integrity, something I wish more young girls would see. A definite tearjerker I recommend you get out the popcorn, a box of kleenex and watch it with your mom, friends, sisters, neices, cousins . . . an excellent movie for the whole family!
