Living Out Loud
When you're tired of your quiet life, it's time to start...
Judith Nelson (Holly Hunter), newly divorced, is consumed by vindictive fantasies of her ex-husband and his young bride. Her life is empty until she finds unexpected companionship in a bold and sassy jazz singer (Queen Latifah) at a local club and the down-on-his-luck elevator operator (Danny DeVito) in her fashionable Fifth Avenue building.
Although no longer alone, her life still seems unfulfilled until a passionate kiss from a stranger opens her eyes to all that she's been missing.

I always forget that Holly Hunter is such a fine actress until I see her in something else.
In "Living Out Loud," she brings depth to what could have been a shallow role and, in playing opposite Danny DeVito, she thrusts and parries skillfully with one of the better character actors of our time.
This truly is an adult movie in the best sense of the word - not because it is porn, which it isn't, but because it requires thinking as much as watching. We see Hunter go from spurned wife to victim to renewal with Queen Latifah as a sort of Greek chorus, an inner voice that guides Hunter through her transformation.
Yet because the story isn't linear, it does not move from A to B to C to denoument to happy ending. Yes, it does have a happy ending but not in a typical Hollywood way. Rather, it ends with DeVito - a perennial loser, in debt to loan sharks, sponging off his brother, filled with absurd dreams - learning through Hunter (and showing her at the same time) that we are all capable of living out loud despite whatever came before.
Latifah's singing is simply magnificent and coupled with one really well-choreographed production number in an after hours lesbian club called The Confessional, not only add to the entertainment value of "Living Out Loud" but also advance the story line.
The film is definitely worth adding to your list - but only if you're prepared to think as you watch the movie.Queen Latifah was the saving grace for me. - Photosytes
I found this movie to be very strange. I'm not a big fan of Holly Hunter or Danny Devito, although I still watch movies they are in. The story line/plot was really off beat and some parts of the movie felt as if they were not developed enough for me, while other parts were unnecessary. The acting seem good enough, it was the script that left me a little wanting.
Queen Latifah was great, though. She can really sing jazz!! Wish she had a bigger part or that the movie revolved around her character.
Other all it was an okay movie but not one I would rent again.I enjoyed it - JennieMaeD
I am a fan of both Holly Hunter and Danny Devito and I have to say that I enjoyed this movie. I found the character interacts to be very believable. I found Holly Hunter's character's fantasies funny and in a way realistic, as someone who often fantasies about everyday occurrences. A very enjoyable movie.
