Lone Star
"John Sayles' biggest and best film yet. Gripping. Perceptive and thoughtful." - Janet Maslin, The New York Times
John Sayles' Lone Star begins as a riveting whodunit about the unsolved murder of a corrupt lawman. Soon it becomes much more. The intriguing saga of clashing cultures and dirty dealings in a Texas border town. A moving look at parents and children at odds and the passions of forbidden love across generations.
Lone Star (an Academy Award nominee for its screenplay) takes on the heady complexity of a page-turner novel as its multilayered plot unfolds, showcasing Sayles' gift for assembling the best ensemble casts. Chris Cooper, Matthew McConaughey, Kris Kristofferson, Elizabeth Pena, Joe Morton, Frances McDormand and more give rich performances. It's "a great movie with staying power," Leah Rozen of People wrote, " a journey well worth taking."

Film Noir Home on the Range, in Broad Daylight - Stavros
This film, which I highly recommend, has a brilliant script, with numerous characters all revealed to be increasingly interrelated in the investigation of a thirty-year old murder. conducted by a sheriff who has returned to his home town because he is haunted by his past. Yet it is the script, so superb and gripping and meaningful that keeps me from giving that fifth star. I can't tell you why I feel this way and you may very well disagree with me.
See it.An underrated gem - The_Crazed_Madman
First of all, this movie is NOT a western, its more like a drama with a western setting. This film really makes you think about drawing the lines between good and evil whith the investigation of 40-year old remains in the desert. The way the timelines flow from present to past is wonderfully done, and Matthew McConaughey and Kris Krisofferen's performances were excellent (which what little screen time they had). This is a very slow moving film, but it all pays off in the end (with a twist you'll never guess). Overall, a very underrated gem of a film.A brilliant mystery set in modern-day Texas (10 on 10) - cyrus

This is NOT a ‘Western’ - though you wouldn’t know it by looking at the DVD cover (or the movie’s title). The story is set in a small town in Texas, near the Mexican border. Sherif Deeds is investigating a murder that may have taken place almost 40-years ago. The audience follows him as he learns about the victim and what was going on in the town, at that time. In addition to the main story, there are a series of sub-plots that add a good deal of depth and emotional intensity to the film.
This a well-made movie (even though it starts off a little slow). The story is captivating and complex. The characters are believable, and their conversations are realistic and insightful. The movie flows wonderfully, despite the many twists and turns involved in the investigation. The direction is just superb.
If you’re looking for a quiet and intelligent drama/mystery, this is one of your best bets.
