Love Is A Many Splendored Thing
Studio Classics
Based on a true story and nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing is one of the most "beautiful, absorbing" (Variety) films ever made.
When Eurasian doctor and widow Han Suyin (Jones) and American journalist Mark Elliot meet in Hong Kong, they soon fall in love, despite interracial prejudices and Han's struggle in breaking with tradition. But they face an even greater obstacle to happiness when Elliot is transferred to Korea, where war has broken out. With its "irresistible romantic appeal" (Hollywood Reporter), breathtaking cinematography and poignant performances, this timeless classic is a must-own for any collector.

Downright Saccharine - Publius
This is the kind of chick flick that will cause men to grind their teeth. The cinematography is vivid and it's interesting to see what Hong Kong looked like in the 50's but there's just way too much kissy kissy lovey lovey in this movie. William Holden looks handsome but Jennifer Jones doesn't look very Asian at all not even half Asian really.Dated and ininspiring. - Frank_Ricard
This is one of those films that was perhaps daring and controversial in it's time - but to the modern audience the plot seems simplistic and the conflicts trite and unconvincing. The acting, lauded at the time, seems forced - as with many "classic" films.
For an older film that still really shines after all these years, watch "Casablanca".
