Gregory Peck and Omar Sharif battle to find a legendary cache of gold in this spectacular Wild West adventure. In the Arizona Territory of the 1870s, Marshal Sam Mackenna (Peck) is the only living person who knows the tortuous route to the fabulous "Canon del Oro." During his journey, Mackenna is captured by Colorado (Sharif), a brutal Mexican bandit who has long sought his death. But, if Mackenna is to lead the cutthroat gang to the lost treasure, Colorado must keep him alive. En route, Mackenna and the outlaw band are joined by renegade soldiers, vengeful Indians, cold-blooded killers, and "gentlemen from town." As they near the golden canyon, all but Mackenna are swept by a sudden fever -- the naked greed for gold. Mackenna's Gold is one of the most exciting Westerns ever made.

Lot of Adventure - ShawnConnery
You get a Western for the adventure, right? Well, this movie has a ton of it. Technically well-done, but especially story-wise and even suspense-wise. Sometimes with these kinds of movies, you kind of know what's going to happen, but here you almost never could guess exactly how things would turn out. Western fans might enjoy this curious effort by J.Lee Thompson. There's a great cast (most of whom are wasted in short cameo roles), a decent story about the quest for gold, and amazing location shots in Utah, Arizona, and Oregon. Gregory Peck is a strong lead, along with Omar Sharif, as his nemesis. The beautiful Julie Newmar (Catwoman in the original t.v. Batman series) is convincing as a young Apache woman who has a "thing" for Peck (Mackenna). Ultimately, the film has a cheesy look to it and reminds me of one of those old serials that crop up from time to time late at night on t.v. I can't recommend it, overall, but some of you might find it entertaining, if you enjoy a western action movie. One thumb marginally up.Technically very well made western - harryZ
This is not one of the great westerns as far as saying something goes. It's just a very well made
horse opera with a spectacular ending -
in spite of a cast of what feels like thousands,
the canyon is the real star in this picture.
If you like westerns or action pictures, and
you have a big screen to get the full visual effect, it's well worth renting.
