Although it's a film that didn’t register on the money scale, I personally relished this rare foray into Film Noir territory. Here’s the reason. First, it isn’t. For a comedy purportedly somewhat black, it let’s you know right up front it’s a spoof. Second, I was in a good mood. Third, I’m older than dirt and the cast is a potpourri of old timers--even Joey Bishop, would you believe. All of them appear to be having a ball doing the film and it’s contagious. Finally, great music (at least for my generation). And more..
Jeff Goldblum does the quizzical mobster gunman lover to perfection; his mostly light approach never allows the mood to unduly darken. Richard Dreyfuss is no slouch either; watch for his first grand entrance, red carpet and all. An absolute send-up and in clinic apparel. The gang’s straight man is Gabriel Byrne but not for long. His stand-up ‘My Way’ with Paul Anka brought down our house. Along with his subsequent satirical take on a common scene we've all suffered through before, often.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such an extravaganza of off-beat episodes so elegantly executed. And execution is the operative work…always with flair.
But without the heart, it could not have carried us so warmly to the credits. Ellen Barkin I once remarked on for her very brief but I felt extraordinary contribution years ago as the willful daughter in Tender Mercies, with Robert Duvall. Here a generation later she does glamour with just the right touch of genuine affection; she and Goldblum have us rooting for them immediately. Yes, Diane Lane shows up for the final bits but Ellen mostly carries the flag for the distaff fun and games. With grace--and a lovely bit of flitting hysteria during the resolution. And her steadying influence on Michael Pollard is not to be missed.
For you other oddballs who cherish mature off-beat humour, shaggy dog touches, and satirical treatment of serious stuff…this is for you. You know who you are.Not for everyone - BigAlbert
Most people dont have the appreciation for wise guy comedy and dry sense of humour. It seems to be a lost art. People that appreciate this movie are a little off themselves and a little wacky to be honest. If you like dry comedy, this is a must see. Too bad they dont make movies like this anymore.
