Manhunter
Hannibal Lecter's Legacy Of Evil Begins Here
FBI agent Will Graham (William Petersen) has captured the diabolical Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Brian Cox), nearly losing more than just his mind in the process. But when Graham is called out of retirement to hunt the psychopath known as "The Tooth Fairy" (Tom Noonan in a role Entertainment Weekly calls "one of the freakiest madmen Hollywood has ever given us") he must once again confront the horrors of "Hannibal The Cannibal." If Will Graham enters the mind of the serial killer, can he ever come back?
Joan Allen (The Contender), Dennis Farina, Kim Greist and Stephen Lang co-star in this shocking thriller directed by Michael Mann and adapted from the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. But be warned: Fans and critics alike consider Manhunter to be far superior to The Silence Of The Lambs, as well as one of the most unnerving serial killer movies ever made.

Nice adaptation of red Dragon - Ziegler
Positive: Great acting by the entire cast. Stephen Lang is great in this movie along with the guy who played the serial killer. Hannibal lecter is well played and balanced in this movie. Very nice cinematography and soundtrack.
Negative: Well the film looks very 1980s however a nice looking 1980s at that.
Conclusion: Underrated Mann movie. You can tell he is heading to greatness.Brilliant and Affecting - ABC99
I may be alone on this but I think this is a much better movie than Silence of the Lambs, and I love Silence of the Lambs. This is one of the hand full of movies that has stayed with me since I first saw it. In an early scene when William Peterson stands alone in a blood soaked white room speaking into a tape recorded puts the audience in a cold uneasy place.
Brian Cox is also great as an earlier version of Hannibal Lector. See this movie and keep in mind the 80's soundtrack was cool at the time.~ OFTEN OVER-MISSED FIRST HANNIBAL LECTOR OUTING ~ 4 1/4 Stars ~ - SqueakyChair
SNAPSHOT: Manhunter is a Hannibal Lector thriller. It is tight and well acted. Doesn't quite match Silence of Lambs but is well worth seeing. My suggestion is to treat Manhunter as the first movie [BUT rent the Dirctor's Cut Version over this one], Lambs as #2, Hannibal as #3 and Red Dragon as a post-written #4 prequel.
MORE THOUGHTS: Manhunter is the little known first film where Hannibal was first introduced opposite William Petersen [of CSI TV fame]. Re-made to cast Hopkins universally as Lector [Red Dragon]. Hands down Hopkins is the best Hannibal.
These are some of the few series sequels that are almost as good as each other and both are better than the original, Manhunter. But ALL are worthy.
