Great movie - brentb
I do believe this is one of the rare movies that every member of the cast gave a stellar performace. But applause must go to Pitt for his portrayal as both Death and the human Joe Black. The subtle changes in his character was performed masterfully. Forlani did well as the youngest daughter of the media mogul Parish, going from daddy's little girl to seductress. But besides it, this movie also raises some deeper issues, like highlighting the small things we take for granted in our everyday life. Do make an effort to watch it, you'll find yourself profoundly touched by it.wonderful script - maimou
Some reviewers might think i am being cheesy for giving this movie 4 stars, but I fell in love with this movie. This movie captured me with the script and the unique story line. I was truly moved by this movie and thought Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins were brilliant in this movie.Poor choices by director - ChaunceyGardener
We watched what must have been the director's extended cut of this film.
First the good. Interesting premise Death in the form of Brad Pitt has come to take successful Anthony Hopkins away, but because Hopkins' character has had such a fulfilling life Death decides to linger with him a bit in a sort of small vacation.
Then the film starts flounder. Death seems childish, eg has never had peanut butter despite being a supernatural character that has existed in all places in all times. A poor character choice.
Also (in our version) there were very long slow pauses with lots of close ups. Another poor choice.
And finally the rather extended and confusing ending. Since the ending has been ordained from the beginning the director tries to sugar coat the love interest and the result is several true non sequiturs which shock and distract the viewer.
Two thumbs down.
