Midway came out when I was a kid and really into war movies, this was one of my favorites from then. There are many problems with this movie but because it hold so much sentimental value to me I rate it very high. Many big stars in this one including Fonda ( my favorite), they all do decent jobs just not great. There is alot of old stock war footage in this movie and some of it gets used more than once (kinda cheesy) but I still forgive all its faults and love this movie. Was this movie for real? Hmm, I think I would have had more fun watching stock footage of the battle of Midway than actually watching the movie Midway. Oops, sorry, I forgot.Half of the old WWII movie is stock footage. The problem with this movie is that it has hilariously bad characters and some pretty cheesy performances, not to mention an entire entourage of Japanese characters who speak English with flawless American accents. I understand Japanese characters speaking English, this happens all the time in movies, but I thought it was hilarious how they all sounded like they came from L.A.
The worst offense Midway makes is the comically bad battle sequences. They consist of a plainly fake shot of an actor in a cockpit with fake clouds and smoke going past the camera. The camera never even bothers to change angles! It’s always from the left side looking through the glass and nothing else of the aircraft is ever shown. When they want to show that the plane moves to the right, the camera will shift slightly and then the movie will cut to what is so obviously stock footage of a plane that is moving to the right. Then it cuts back the actor and the cycle repeats. The problem is that this looks so incredibly fake that I was laughing all the way through the movie. In fact, in a couple scenes they actually showed BF 109 aircraft. The BF 109 was German, and neither the Americans nor the Japanese ever used it. I have to wonder if they even tried to put any effort into the battle scenes.
The movie also ends abruptly with a main character dying in a horrible plane accident (also plainly stock footage) and then two minutes later the movie ends with no real closure. I think they should have waited a few decades, hired a competent director and writer, some better actors and got some actual footage that they shot into the movie to at least have something that is worth not laughing at.Midway: Collectors Edition - Opet
I am again deeply saddened that this is once again the "short" version edited for TV. I naturally assumed that since it was the "Collector's Edition" it would be the original release with the Battle of Coral Reef footage that sets the stage and completes the plot. The original is over 3 hrs, 20 min! With nearly an hour missing it comes across as nothing more than a patriotic soap opera instead of the excellent re-enactment I remember, but may never see again. Spoiled goods.
