Monkeybone
It's rude! It's raunchy! It's totally outrageous! Brendan Fraser goes bananas in this comedy that breaks all the rules.
After a car crash sends repressed cartoonists Stu Miley (Fraser) into a coma, he and the mischievous Monkeybone, his hilariously horny alter-ego, wake up in a wacked-out waystation for lost souls. When Monkeybone takes over Stu's body and escapes to wreak havoc on the real world, Stu has to find a way to stop him before his sister pulls the plug on reality forever!
Saturday Night Live's Chris Kattan, Bridget Fonda and Whoopi Goldberg co-star in this inventive blend of live action and stop-motion animation, loaded with must-see, eye-popping F/X and some of the crudest, laugh-out-loud humor since South Park.

A massive mess of a film from Henry Selick. - estefan
Who would have thought that the director of such imaginative films like The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach and Coraline could produce such an awful, un-funny piece of cinema? The screenplay is just one gigantic mess that fails to elicit much in the laugh department as we get one tired gag after another and shock humour just for the sake of being shocking. It doesn't help that the characters here and annoying and terribly one-dimensional to the point where any attempt at genuine emotion is squandered by the fact that we could care less about them. The usual likable Brendan Fraser has no life here and he is made even more annoying when Monkeybone inhabits his body and boy, that monkey is so annoying. The story is all over the place, adding plot-points here and there that are soon ignored. If there are some good things about this, it's that the scenes in the Nightmare World are visually arresting, with the art direction providing some really well-constructed sets and the stop-motion used to bring Monkeybone to life are very impressively done, as much as I did hate the character. Plus, the film does move rather quickly, so at least I wasn't bored out of my skull while watching the film's many failed attempts at humour. I also liked Rose McGowan and I wished she was in this more, though more because of how great she looked with cat whiskers and cat ears (and I'm not even a furry, but...rawl). Though, she did seem to have better chemistry with Fraser than Bridget Fonda did. But, nonetheless, this is one gigantic mess of a film and I'm really pleased that Henry Selick managed to rebound with Coraline.Monkey Troubles - JasonTHX
What is it with Brendan Fraser, wide-smiled and bug-eyed clearly having a ball making movies like "MonkeyBone", "The Mummy" and "Looney Tunes: Back In Action"? It's evident he seems to be enjoying himself but that's the problem. He's the only one having any fun. It must be a fun place in his head. Fraser who can be good in movies like "Gods And Monsters" and "Crash" apes (no pun intended) for the audience in these movies and an actor can only do so much. If the material you're working with isn't there you can only stretch yourself so thin before the whole things wrecks itself in front of you.
"Monkeybone" is a movie along the lines of "Cool World" but Ralph Bakshi's 1992 feature about a cartoonist living in his creation is witty in a icky kind of way. Even Jessica Rabbitt was proud oh her - um..enhancements. Monkeybone is not sleazy in that kind of "oh my god, that's so wrong but I'm still laughing anyway" kind of way that say, "South Park" does so well. Monkeybone is just stupid, annoying and irritating.
What's the movie about? Does it matter? Well..OK..Brendan Fraser is a cartoonist, creator of Monkeybone, a rude, obnoxious little imp, monkey. Fraser winds up in a car accident and somehow winds up in a world he created, while Monkeybone inhabits Fraser's body and wreaks havoc in the real world. Bridget Fonda plays Fraser's girlfriend and is shocked by the new egregious new person. It's all a big race in the fantasy world for Fraser to get back and put Monkeybone back where he belongs.
This material could have been handled much better. I liked director Henry Selicks 1994 "Cabin Boy" (yes, I was the one.) but this one is just a mess. Add to that the level of talent wasted (Bridget...we miss you..come back to movies..don't let this be your last role.) Even (Academy Award winner!) Whoopi Goldberg shows up. Yep.."The Color Purple" was long ago. Ugh!
"Monkeybone" left me with a headace. Leave it.Typical Brendan Fraser - Traffic66
If you like Brendan Fraser you'll like this movie. It's a good comedy with lots of slapstick involved. I have no problem watching it over again. Funny storyline with a couple of great cameo's. Each actor and actress help each other along the story line and plot progress. Some great scenes with the monkey in and out of the nightmare world.
