Mr. Deeds Without the Corn - c4th
In case you are wondering, this is the same story as the 2002 Mr. Deeds starring Adam Sandler and Winona Ryder under the direction of Steven Brill. If you’d prefer the story of Longfellow Deeds trimmed of the corn offered up in the Sandler version you might be delighted by the original 1936 Frank Capra adaptation of Clarence Budington Kelland’s short story, Opera Hat. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town starring Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur is a marvellous romantic and funny tale about a man who proves to those around him that there are more important things in life than money.Capra excellence. - estefan
Gary Cooper is fantastic in this touching story of a man trying to deal with the sudden added wealth he's inherited. Mr Deeds is incredibly flawed, but likeable as any Frank Capra protagonist and the romantic angle is done nicely with nary an amount of schmaltz. He works nicely with Jean Arthur and their chemistry is well-played. The screenplay is smart and balances the comedic and dramatic elements extremely well. Its message is still relevant today and as such, it holds up amazingly in this day and age, much better than that cruddy Adam Sandler adaptation. This is pure Capra excellence.Capra At His Best - FilmJunkie
A great Capra film about a man, Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), who inherits millions of dollars and must deal with the big city sharks who want to take it away.
Eventually Deeds realizes that the world is a much more cruel place than he could have ever imagined.
Like all Capra dreamers, Deeds is reinvigorated in the end, but the journey is most certainly worth it. Cooper's eyes sparkle through the black and white frames, and you can't help but falling in love with him.
Jean Arthur is a treat as the reporter who uses him and then regrets her actions. You can feel the chemistry between them in the remarkable courtroom scene where our hero is finally redeemed.
Capra believed that eventually the system will help us, as he showed in 'Mr. Smith Goes To Washington' (1939), and we believe him too in this sweet and charming film.
P.S. Forget the Adam Sandler version...PLEASE!
