Mr. North
"A most enjoyable comedy." -The New York Times
Anthony Edwards, Mary Stuart Masterson and Virginia Madsen star with a cast of luminaries, including Robert Mitchum, Harry Dean Stanton, Anjelica Huston, Tammy Grimes and Lauren Bacall, in this heartwarming and hilarious fable about a man who sets a wealthy community's hair on end...literally!
When young Yale graduate Theophilius North (Edwards) settles in Newport, Rhode Island, he charms the elite with his ability to heal with an unusual energy. But as North gains a reputation as a savior, he simultaneously endures the wrath of the local doctor, who labels him a charlatan. Suddenly this gifted newcomer must defend his honor, before his unique talent sparks a backlash that lands him in jail!

This is a lovely little movie, based on a novel by Thornton Wilder which is excellent and you shouldn't miss -- but the movie does a pretty good job of adapting the story to the screen.
It's an interesting tale of a freethinker in a simpler time -- the description above would make it sound like it's all focused on a certain special ability he happens to have, but he's an iconoclast in a lot of ways and definitely shakes up the small community he's moved into.
The casting is wonderful in a lot of ways -- Robert Mitchum, Lauren Bacall, Anjelica Huston, Virginia Madsen, Harry Dean Stanton -- with the exception of the lead. Anthony Edwards isn't bad, but he doesn't quite carry off the portrayal to me -- there are layers he can't quite reach.
