This movie starts off very funny but turns quite depressing, with funny moments. Muriel is a 20something who has been rejected by her friends, her town, put down by her father, and decides that the only way to happiness is to become a new "Mariel" by getting married and livign a new life. She encounters an old highschool classmate who changes her perspective and gives her life. But Mariel's obssesssion with becoming someone different loses her focus and loses perspective, and turns away the only true friend she has.The real deal - billie
Comedy? tragedy? both and neither, just like, um, life. Tony Collette is a breath of fresh air taking on this very unflattering role in her "starlet" years. She and Rachel Griffith are great together. Muriel is not really a likeable character, she' such a loser - but the world is full of Muriels and it's nice to learn that they are people too. Muriel comes a long way, supported by and supporting her friend played by Rachel Griffith, from Porpoise Spit to Sydney. She does some dorky things, some illegal things, some twisted things, but somehow she's innocent of all ill will. Her mother is the true tragedy here, Muriel and her friend are last seen heading to Sydney to start their new lives, again, but right this time. The rest of Muriel's family, well, they seem doomed. Perhaps Muriel is the only one who will get away...and the one guy she dated was present at her "wedding", so there is hope that she will have some male attention after all.
I really enjoyed this. It's easy to identify with Muriel, and it's certainly NOT your average wedding movie, full of pretty people and careful vacant plotting. This is the real thing, as most Aussie films seem to be.
Rent it!A HIT for fans of the leading ladies - Qwinyrose
Both Toni Collette (Muriel) and her co-star Rachel Griffiths (Rhonda) are exceptional in this dark comedy. Fans currently enjoying both of these actresses in their current film and television roles will definitely get a big kick seeing their "roots" While both ladies come from seemingly different backgrounds in this film, they realize through the movie that it is okay to need each other and yet not need the approval of the outside world to "be" who they are. Both feed off the differences while deep down, they are so much alike.
The soundtrack is superb for any ABBA fan and most will be quite tickled with the vacation resort performance.
Excellent casting. Perfect, blunt and horrifying dialog. There is no mincing. Depressingly hilarious film. Well worth the watch.
