Okay so Billy Crystal seems to either hit it out of the park with his movies (ie. When Harry Met Sally) or bomb like this awful film. I cannot recall one thing I enjoyed about this movie. The premise is so inane - Billy Crystal wants to turn a 7 ft. giant into a star. Only problem is that the giant has about as much personality as paint drying. Billy Crystal is one of my favourite actors and screenwriters and he has another hit with this film. It is a funny film with an interesting story and good directing and acting.
The story focuses on a very tall man who leads an isolated life in Hungary and his journey to America to find fame and fortune as well as find a long-lost teenage heart-throb. It is a realistic story with realistic characters and lots of laughs along the way. Billy Crystal helped write and produce this film and it has his mark of quality. My only real criticism is that there is a graphic vomit scene. Too many films these days have a vomit scene. I guess it's supposed to be funny, but it is seriously disturbing to watch it in film after film after film. But you will see the scene coming and can fast-forward over it.
Otherwise, it is an entertaining film to watch with some very nice scenery of Hungary (Czech Republic) and the monastery (castle).Awful Film - xYJx
Billy Crystal is either loved or hated. While the man has had many successful films, he also has his share of bad ones. This is a bad one. Undoubtedly, this film has heart, but it doesn't translate to a good film. Too many absurdities drag this one down, especially its undecidedness to appeal to an adult crowd or a kid audience. Perhaps that's this greatest downfall, however we will never know. Billy has done many other great roles before and since this film. If you're a Crystal fan, this may appeal to you. If you're a casual viewer, better films lay dormant.
