Night Passage
Universal Western Collection
When the local railroad becomes the constant target of a band of desperadoes led by the notorious Whitey Harbin (Dan Duryea), train officials recruit soft-spoken but life-hardened employee Grant McLaine (Stewart) to guard the payroll from any more robberies. Trouble is, the gang's most skilled and lethal gun-slinger, the Utica Kid (Audie Murphy), is Grant's kid brother. Torn between the bonds of blood and his allegiance to the railroad, Grant finds himself hoping for the best but preparing for the worst as the train comes under attack from Harbin's bandits, climaxing in an unforgettable gun battle as the brothers from opposite sides of the law meet again to settle an old score.

Enjoyable Stewart Western with Audie Murphy - Gregg
An entertaining Western with a somewhat surprisingly complex plot. Features Jimmy Stewart as the accordion playing discredited troubleshooter for the railroad who is given another chance to redeem himself when a payroll shipment needs protection.
To further complicate matters the gang that has been robbing the railroad of late includes his younger brother played by Audie Murphy who was responsible for his downfall. Also the railroad manager that hires him used to be his friend and is married to a former flame of his. Add in the girl that has fallen for his younger brother the young boy (Brandon De Wilde from Shane) who gets caught in the middle the somewhat unhinged gangleader Whitey (Dan Duryea) and you begin to see the complexity. There are still a few more characters and plot threads that not included above that are introduced but not fully developed.
While not outstanding the picture does have some good performances, well done action scenes and an interesting if occasionally over involved story. Probably could have made more than one movie with all of the well defined characters that are introduced.
