Nights Of Cabiria
Giulietta Masina won Best Actress at Canes as the title character of one of Fellini's most haunting films. Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Nights of Cabiria (Le Notti di Cabiria) is the tragic story of a naïve prostitute searching for true love in the seediest sections of Rome. Criterion proudly presents the restored director's cut in a breathtaking new transfer.

Although Fellini's direction is brilliant, the real star here is Giulietta Masina. Her portrayal of Cabiria is just masterful, and through the myriad of events and problems she faces in the film, I have found one of cinema's greatest characters. The slow build up of Cabiria's character is mesmerizing, and towards the final scenes of the film, it becomes a flawless study of a lonesome and contrite character that faced substantial despair, and comes out unbroken.Chaplin Meets Fellini - CanCinephile
Nights of Cabiria is one of Fellini’s least known pieces, but its restoration on the Criterion Collection DVD is simply stunning and should be experienced by all. The DVD includes an addition 7 ½ minute scene that was left out of the original cut by producer Dino De Laurentiis.
Giulietta Masina as Cabiria is a treat. She plays Cabiria like a performance with her sketched eyebrows that make her look like a cartoon character, her shrug, her walking, and her facial expressions. The way in which Masina inhabits the character is joyous and sad, all at once, as she conjures up Chaplin in many regards and gives us a character both to laugh at and to feel sympathy for.
Fellini’s film captivates because it captures in on the subject of loneliness and on characters that don’t quite fit in the mould of normative society. The prostitutes and pimps within Nights of Cabiria are perhaps more human than those that live life at an arm’s length and, as such, are beautiful and worthy explorations of the human condition.Somewhat taken aback - bw1-
My wife and I saw the picture during its first theatrical release. We have changed -- the picture hasn't. What once seemed like a charming darkish comedy with touching moments has become to us the dissection of a rather shallow and self-centered person -- perhaps that's what was intended. Lost its glitter in our minds entirely.
